ABSTRACT

Contextual translation to reflect the cultural elements of the community that uses the translated document has been a critical issue for discussion among Bible translators. The interpretation of 1 Corinthians 13 has been a thorn in the flesh of biblical exegetes, translators, and interpreters, which also affects contextual translations. This essay argues that translations must reflect contemporary terms and concepts in the cultural psychology of the community of the audience. It attempts a contextual translation of 1 Corinthians 13 into Gã (a Ghanaian) language. The translation process considered the influence of Pentecostal and Charismatic Christian Ministries in Ghana, and the contemporary Christians, who speak Gã as a second language. This study adopts the view that 1 Corinthians 13 is an original composition by Paul and it is an integral part of the discourse on spiritual gifts, which began from 1 Corinthians 12–14.
