ABSTRACT

Entrepreneurship education has emerged as a powerful driver of sustainable development, especially in regions grappling with socio-economic challenges like South Africa. This paper draws on a qualitative research method, utilizing secondary data sources from various authors. The data was gathered from published and peer-reviewed publications, internet sources, and textbooks relevant to the issue at hand. Several authors highlighted the crucial role of entrepreneurship education in equipping students with the necessary competencies and attitudes to navigate complex challenges and devise innovative solutions. By fostering creativity, resilience, and adaptability, these programs empower individuals to become agents of change in their communities, driving economic growth, social empowerment, and environmental stewardship. This paper underlines the importance of integrating sustainability principles into entrepreneurship education curricula to ensure the development of socially and environmentally responsible enterprises. Additionally, it emphasizes the need to nurture a culture of entrepreneurship and innovation to unlock the potential for prosperity and resilience in marginalized communities. This approach aligns with the aspirations of the National Agenda 2063 and Sustainable Development Goal 4, which aims to transform economies and create jobs. Entrepreneurship education fosters economic growth, social empowerment, and environmental stewardship, contributing to a more prosperous and resilient society.

ABOUT AUTHOR(S)

Mr. Ntsika Dyantyi serves as a Lecturer in the Department of Business Management Education within the Faculty of Education at Walter Sisulu University. His expertise lies in Educational Management and Leadership, particularly within the realms of higher education and secondary school settings. He actively engages in international research conferences, contributing to the discourse on educational management practices. He also holds memberships in key university committees such as the Faculty Learning and Teaching Committee, Curriculum Transformation Committee, and Research and Higher Degrees Committee. Additionally, He is a valued member of the Entrepreneurship Development in Higher Education (EDHE) under the community of practice, where he contributes to initiatives aimed at promoting entrepreneurship development in higher education.

Professor. Thobeka Ncanywa is a full Professor of Economics in the Department of Business Management Education at the Faculty of Education at Walter Sisulu University. She has expertise in the field of Applied Economics, Public Sector Economics, Monetary Economics, Development Economics, Econometrics, Micro-Economics, Education Economics, Macro-Economics, and Entrepreneurship studies. She has been involved in teaching and learning, community engagement activities, publications, and supervising postgraduate students (total of 40). She has published 26 articles in local and international journals, 17 conference proceedings, and 5 book chapters. She has also chaired sessions at academic and non-academic conferences. She is a board member of Economic Research of Southern Africa, and International Public Administration and Development Alternatives. She has been involved in projects such as student entrepreneurship development in higher education and a multidisciplinary project on resilient futures in transforming the mining sector. She is a leader in the research niche area for “Sustainable Development and Contemporary Issues in Society and Education” at WSU.

Professor. Bulelwa Nguza-Mduba is an Associate Professor and Executive Dean of the Faculty of Management and Public Administration Sciences at Walter Sisulu University at Butterworth Campus. She joined the higher education sector for over twenty years as a lecturer, senior lecturer, head of department, director of school, the Dean of Faculty of Management Sciences, and acting Rector for Butterworth Campus. She was a member of Hospital Board and published a few papers, attended conferences nationally and internationally and being the session chairs in some. She is the editor of journals and external examiner for master’s theses. She has supervised several Honours and Master’s students to completion. She is the Deputy Chairperson of Entrepreneurship Development in Higher Education (EDHE) under the Community of Practice (CoP) of entrepreneurial universities. She is the holder of the following qualifications: Doctor of Business Administration from UKZN, MBL from UNISA, M Ed from UFS, B Comm, B Comm Hons, B Ed from UNISA, B Comm Ed from UNITRA, Matric from Lamplugh High School in Butterworth as well as other professional certificates.
